Osteoporosis Physio Black Rock
Supporting your bones begins with moving confidently.
Moving with Confidence for Stronger Bones
Our bones quietly support us every day, so it is worth giving them some attention when they are less strong than they should be. Whether you have osteoporosis, osteopenia, or concerns about bone health, staying active deserves a higher place on your priority list.
As an osteoporosis physio near Black Rock, we provide personalised care that focuses on safe, evidence-informed movement. When bone loss starts to rear its head, your goal should be to build strength, improve balance, and reduce your risk of falls and fractures. And that’s our goal for you, too!

What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis gradually reduces bone density over time, leaving bones more fragile than they once were. This loss of strength means a relatively small bump or minor fall may result in a fracture.
Our bones naturally break down and rebuild throughout our lives. As we get older, particularly after the age of 50, this process can, well, begin to fall apart a little bit. If this happens, we lose bone faster than new bone can form.
At BMC, we aim to help people manage mild to severe osteoporosis through movement-focused physiotherapy designed to support bone health and improve overall strength, balance, and function.
Osteoporosis Symptoms and Fracture Risks
There may be no obvious warning signs while osteoporosis is developing, earning it the description ‘silent’ disease. In some cases, a person only becomes aware of it after a minor fall or tumble results in a fracture.
If menopause, a family history of osteoporosis, extended corticosteroid use or certain medical conditions apply to you, consider speaking with your GP and physiotherapist about your bone health.
Although osteoporosis may cause no noticeable symptoms at first, certain changes can provide a clue, including:
- A broken wrist, hip or spinal bone indicating fragility in the bones
- Loss of height over time
- A stooping stance or increasingly curved posture
- Ongoing back pain associated with compression fractures in the spine
- Feeling weaker or less assured during ordinary movements
- Reduced balance that may make falls more likely

Osteoporosis FAQs
Who is most likely to develop osteoporosis?
Women are actually four times more likely to develop osteoporosis than men (just our luck!). While osteoporosis can affect men, women are particularly at risk of experiencing bone loss, particularly after menopause.
Many people of all genders don’t realise they have osteoporosis until they fracture a bone. This is why early assessment, preventative strategies, and appropriate exercise are so important.
Could physiotherapy support people living with osteoporosis?
Yes, it may. While physiotherapy can’t reverse osteoporosis, it often plays an important role in addressing strength, balance, posture, and mobility while reducing the risk of falls and fractures. Regular, appropriately prescribed exercise is a key part of long-term osteoporosis management.
What should I know about resistance training when I have osteoporosis?
How does osteopenia differ from osteoporosis?
With osteopenia, bones have less density than expected, but the reduction is not as marked as it is with osteoporosis. Recognising it early may give you an opportunity to support your bone health before osteoporosis develops.
Can exercise improve bone health?
When chosen appropriately, weight-bearing and resistance exercise can support bone health by encouraging the bones to adapt to physical load. Alongside helping maintain bone density, it may improve strength, balance and function—plus, there’s no reason healthy movement can’t be fun.
Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?
You can come straight to BMC for an assessment without first obtaining a referral. If you have been referred by your GP or another doctor, we can communicate with your healthcare team and contribute to your ongoing care.
