A Different Approach to Managing Osteoarthritis
Is hip or knee osteoarthritis bothering you? The GLA:D® Program is a structured exercise and education program designed for people just like you! Instead of avoiding movement because of joint pain, the program aims to help you understand your condition, build strength, and develop confidence in moving your body.
At Better Movement Collective, our trained physiotherapists deliver the GLA:D® Program in a supportive, small-group environment. Your physiotherapist will guide you through targeted exercises and help you understand how movement and exercise may support your ongoing osteoarthritis management.

Who is the GLA:D® Exercise Program for?
Whether osteoarthritis is affecting your ability to walk, climb stairs, exercise, or perform everyday activities, GLA:D® offers practical tools designed to help you keep moving and doing the things that matter to you.
The GLA:D® Program is designed specifically for people with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis symptoms. It may be suitable if you:
- Have been diagnosed with hip or knee osteoarthritis
- Experience ongoing hip or knee pain, stiffness, or reduced mobility
- Have become less active because movement feels uncomfortable
- Feel uncertain about exercising with osteoarthritis
- Want to improve your strength and physical capacity
- Are looking for guidance with long-term osteoarthritis management
- Have been referred by your GP for exercise-based rehabilitation
- Prefer the encouragement and accountability of a small group
GLA:D® may also be helpful for people managing osteoarthritis as they get older and want to maintain their independence, function, mobility, and ability to participate in the activities they enjoy. In some cases, it may also be recommended for those recovering from hip or knee joint replacement surgery.
How GLA:D® May Help With Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis
GLA:D® combines evidence-based education with supervised exercise to help you take a more active role in managing osteoarthritis.
Build Strength
Progressive exercises aim to help, and they can also be progressively fun! They’re designed to help you develop strength, joint stability, and physical capacity that may reduce pain and support everyday movement.
Move With Confidence
Learn how to exercise safely and become more comfortable moving your body, even when osteoarthritis is part of your life.
Understand Your Osteoarthritis
Education sessions provide practical information about osteoarthritis, exercise, and strategies for managing your symptoms.
Stay Active
The goal isn’t simply to get through a six-week program and send you on your way! GLA:D® was designed to help you develop the knowledge and confidence to continue moving beyond the program.
Receive Professional Guidance
Your physiotherapist will monitor your technique, provide guidance, and adapt exercises to your current abilities.
Exercise in a Supportive Group
Small-group sessions aim to provide the benefits of professional supervision while offering the encouragement and motivation that come from exercising alongside others.
What Does the GLA:D® Program Include?
The GLA:D® Program follows a structured format, combining education with supervised exercise. While the program recommends a minimum six-week period, we often see meaningful changes occurring at the twelve-week point, and beneficial results with ongoing participation.
Step 1: Initial Assessment
Your program begins with an individual assessment with a GLA:D® trained physiotherapist. We’ll discuss your symptom progression, health, movement, strength, and overall goals to make sure the program is appropriate for you and establish your starting point.
Step 2: Education and Exercise
You’ll take part in education sessions and supervised group exercise sessions. Your physiotherapist will guide you through the exercises and help you understand how to manage osteoarthritis through movement.
Step 3: Keep Moving Forward
GLA:D® is designed to equip you with the skills and support to make ongoing exercise or rehabilitation a part of your osteoarthritis management plan. We’ll work with you to tailor a treatment plan to your individual goals.

Your GLA:D® Questions Answered
What is the GLA:D® Program for?
The GLA:D® Program is designed for people experiencing symptoms of hip or knee osteoarthritis. It combines education and supervised exercise and was designed to help improve strength, physical capacity, and confidence with movement while providing strategies for ongoing management.
Is GLA:D® suitable for hip osteoarthritis?
Yes, GLA:D® is specifically for people experiencing hip osteoarthritis symptoms. If hip pain or stiffness is making walking, exercise, or everyday activities more difficult, the program may become part of your rehabilitation. Your physiotherapist can assess your symptoms and discuss whether GLA:D® is an option.
Is GLA:D® suitable for knee osteoarthritis?
Yes, GLA:D® may also help people with knee osteoarthritis symptoms build strength, improve physical capacity, and feel more confident moving. If knee pain affects your everyday activities or stops you from doing the exercise you enjoy, our knee pain physiotherapy services can also provide individualised support.
How long does the GLA:D® Program take?
The standard GLA:D® Program recommends a minimum six-week format, including two education sessions and 12 supervised exercise sessions, generally completed twice per week, however, we understand that each person is different and that meaningful change can take time. We’ll work with you individually to determine the best timeline and approach for your needs and goals.
Do I need to be fit to join GLA:D®?
Absolutely not! You don’t need to be a regular gym-goer or even particularly confident with exercise to participate. Your physiotherapist will consider your current abilities and guide you through appropriate exercises as you build your strength and capacity.
Will exercise make my osteoarthritis worse?
It’s understandable to feel cautious about exercising when your joints hurt. However, appropriate exercise is often an important part of managing hip and knee osteoarthritis. Your physiotherapist will guide you through the program, help you understand your symptoms, and show you how to exercise appropriately for your current abilities.
Can I join GLA:D® if I've had surgery?
You are ineligible for GLA:D® if you are post-replacement surgery on the affected joint. You are eligible if you have had surgery on other areas. Don’t worry if you have had joint surgery, we can still help! Our clinical strength and exercise physiotherapy services are both suitable for post-surgery and we can develop a plan to suit your needs. Speak with our physiotherapists to find out more.
What happens after I finish GLA:D®?
Everyone’s circumstances are unique. There is no limitation on how long you can continue to participate in GLA:D® and it can be a valuable lifestyle program for those who find it beneficial. There is also the opportunity to transition into another exercise or rehabilitation service at Better Movement Collective if that suits your goals better. We’ll work one on one with you to develop an approach that works for you.
